Friday GOOD: Date ideas that don't cost a dime
Keep your relationship lit without burning cash, keep the conversation sparkling with just a few key words, and grab a tissue for our last story.
“I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the Garden with her than inside it without her.”

Psychologists say don’t let the accountants ruin your love life.
Many of us were broke when we started dating the people who would become our spouses. If we could build love on the cheap, shouldn’t we be able to maintain it at the same low price?
Well… yes, and in this story by our newest writer, Amy Lamare, we’ve got five ideas from psychologists for keeping the flame burning with the fuel you’ve already got.
“Couples can easily stay bonded without burning themselves out.”
From “parallel play” (yes, it’s a thing) to a throwback night with your wedding album and a bottle of wine, these tips focus on connection, novelty, and recharging your relationship without draining your bank account.
So, whether you’re new together or just want to feel that way again…

This image of the Bow Bridge in Central Park, NYC, as the leaves change, has me checking plane ticket prices. (As low as $170 round-trip from Los Angeles, if that’s helpful to you.)
Leave “how are you” at the door.
“How are you?” is conversational poison. In the States, it’s basically just “hello.” You toss it out while passing someone on a walk with zero expectation they’ll stop and answer (in fact, you’d probably be annoyed if they did). You’re as likely to get a real reply from “how are you” as you are to get a detailed answer from a kid after asking, “What did you learn in school?”
If you want a great answer, you need a great question. Erik Barnes found an expert with exactly that. Vanessa Van Edwards suggests asking: “What’s been the highlight of your day?”
Sounds simple, right? But as Barnes explains, the psychology behind it makes it surprisingly powerful and way more versatile than you’d think.
* - We’d ask what the highlight of your day has been, but let’s be honest. It’s this newsletter. 😁
You’ll want a tissue for this story from the GOOD Vault.
If you’re planning to visit a loved one this weekend, you already know what’s coming. At the end of the night, as you pull from their driveway, there will be that little parting heartbreak that happens as they wave goodbye. For photographer Deanna Dikeman, that bittersweet ritual became something bigger.
For nearly three decades, she snapped her parents waving from the driveway. What began as a casual photo in 1991 turned into “Leaving and Waving,” a quietly devastating portrait of family, ritual, and time itself.
The final image? You’ll have to see it for yourself. You’ve been warned about the tissue.

Yes, it’s Australian, so of course the comment section is filled with (legitimate) concerns about how venomous it might be, but LOOK AT THOSE EARS!
