Harvard study claims martial arts is the best exercise for people over 60

We’re throwing elbows with Harvard’s favorite workout for the over-60 set, cranking up a playlist that’ll haunt your Halloween guests, and unearthing vintage recipes that’ll make you question your grandparents' judgment. Oh, and there's a puppy poll.

Unleash your inner Bruce Lee.

You know you’ve got to stay active as you get older. But if exercise is kicking your butt, maybe it’s time to kick back. According to Harvard, the best workout for older adults isn’t walking or weights, it’s martial arts.

“When you hold strong stances, perform controlled kicks, or use strikes, your muscles pull on the bones…”

‘Soft’ martial arts like tai chi or aikido help with flexibility, muscle tone, and balance. Or, if you want all that and a dose of cardiovascular exercise, kick it up to hard mode with a bit of taekwondo or Brazilian jiu-jitsu. As Erik Barnes reports, the benefits don’t stop there. Read the full article to see the science and find the style that fits you best.

Something new for your bucket list. This magical blue cave is a hidden grotto on Croatia’s Biševo Island, where sunlight reflects off the seafloor to bathe the water in an otherworldly glow.

Keep This Stock Ticker on Your Watchlist

They’re a private company, but Pacaso just reserved the Nasdaq ticker “$PCSO.”

No surprise the same firms that backed Uber, eBay, and Venmo already invested in Pacaso. What is unique is Pacaso is giving the same opportunity to everyday investors. And 10,000+ people have already joined them.

Created a former Zillow exec who sold his first venture for $120M, Pacaso brings co-ownership to the $1.3T vacation home industry.

They’ve generated $1B+ worth of luxury home transactions across 2,000+ owners. That’s good for more than $110M in gross profit since inception, including 41% YoY growth last year alone.

And you can join them today for just $2.90/share. But don’t wait too long. Invest in Pacaso before the opportunity ends September 18.

She's a GOOD girl!

Five months, 20 pounds - place your bets.

How are these ears going to end up (or down)?

This is my new pup, Gabby*. She's a rescue and they guess that she's part lab, part Carolina Dog. Place your bets and I'll keep you posted!

And what did we learn?

Yesterday, we shared the secret to getting your kids off the couch and into the world. Then we asked about how your parents did it. Looks like most GOOD readers were bound to the whims of the streetlights!

  • They lit up a cigarette and sent me outside till the lights came on. (41.7%)

  • Taught me to ride a bike, then immediately sat down with a cold drink. (27.8%)

  • Had a full VHS library of Jane Fonda. (5.6%)

  • Coached every sport, even the ones they didn’t understand. (8.3%)

Reader MelissaDiane had a little of each. “My dad was a runner and my mom was a couch potato. I ended up somewhere in the middle.”

If they can put out the Halloween candy at the supermarket already, we can write about scary songs.

Are you like my wife? Are you already starting to sneak out the odd Halloween decoration? (“It’s just a pumpkin. It’s autumnal!”) If so, you’re gonna love this. Our resident music guru Ryan Reed consulted expert analysts, critic picks, and the fine strangers of the internet to find the music most likely to make your blood run cold.*

From experimental electronics to whispered lyrics about death, this playlist isn’t for the faint of heart. But if you’re ready to add some genuine chills to your candy-corn soundtrack... this list goes way beyond “Monster Mash.”

Read the whole story to get the science and hear the examples… IF YOU DARE!

* - It’s a sequel to his Saddest Songs Ever Recorded masterpiece and has us wondering if he’s ok. Are you ok, Ryan?

Where has all the Salisbury Steak gone?

My mother used to make something called… well… we like to keep the Daily GOOD PG, so I’ll call it Stuff on a Shingle. (ahem). If you’re a veteran of a certain age, I’m sure you're familiar; it was a military staple back in the day. But if I wanted to make up a batch for my family today? I wouldn’t know where to find the Chipped Beef at the heart of the recipe. Culinary times have moved on.

As Ryan Reed reports, Gen Xers and Boomers have taken to Reddit to mourn the foods of their youth. From ambrosia to aspic, and especially those jiggly Jell-O salads with lettuce and mayo (yes, really), their dinner tables looked... different.

But are these meals really extinct, or just in hiding?

Beat poetry about the Wright brothers? Rudy Francisco makes it work and sticks the landing. “I told you the wind would feel different up here…”

Until tomorrow, may you fight the urge to put up the giant skeleton decoration just a little longer.
