Where did all the beautiful things go?
Once even sewers were works of art. Now... not so much. What went wrong? Also in this issue, brother/sister combos fight it out for who ends up happiest, tips for saving money with the mop you probably already have, and today in history 33 miners escaped a collapsed cave.
“Siblings: children of the same parents, each of whom is perfectly normal until they get together.”

Our writer visited Boston and left wondering: why do our lamp posts look so sad?
When Ryan Reed wandered through Boston’s Granary Burying Ground, he was struck by the intricate, gothic headstones, tiny monuments that seemed to say even death once deserved elegance. Then he looked up at the streetlights... and wondered what went wrong.
That question led him to Sheehan Quirke, aka The Cultural Tutor, and his deep dive into how Victorian-era design turned sewage facilities into architectural marvels. Reed explores what changed, what we lost, and what we could still choose to get back.
This story isn’t just about lamp posts. It’s about beauty, meaning, and why even our most ordinary spaces deserve something extraordinary.

One “gender combo” scored highest in warmth, but the data tell a deeper story.
Science has already debunked the sugar-and-spice-and-everything-nice idea that sisters are kinder to their siblings than brothers. But when all is said and done, which sibling combos wind up closest?
As Ryan Reed reports, new research in the Journal of Family Psychology analyzed hundreds of adults to find out. The good news: most people described their sibling relationships as “warm,” with little conflict or favoritism. The twist: sister-sister pairs topped the charts for emotional closeness and lifelong support.
When you dig into the details, the story only gets richer, with surprising differences tied to gender identity, sexuality, and even income gaps between siblings. “Closeness” can mean very different things depending on who you are and what life has thrown your way.

Like a tween in math class, your mop isn’t working up to its potential.
That iconic green mop does way more than clean floors. Erik Barnes reports that with a little creativity (and some dry cloths to spare), your Swiffer can take on everything from dusty houseplants to grimy car dashboards.
You can even use it to wipe down bathroom ceilings or reach the tops of hanging ferns without risking your neck on a wobbly chair.
That’s just the start. The complete list of hacks will have you rethinking what those refill packs can do for your wallet and your weekend cleaning routine.
This isn’t a sponsored post. We’re just fans of Swiffer products. But if the fine folks at Swiffer wanted to send a few cases to Erik and me, we wouldn’t protest.

A tunnel collapse followed by 17 days of silence had the world convinced of the worst. The entire crew that had been deep in that Chilean mine must surely have died. Exploratory drills were sent down carefully, and then the eighth exploratory borehole finally broke through and returned with a hand-scrawled note: “Estamos bien en el refugio los 33.“ (“We are well in the refuge—the 33.”)
What had taken on the energy of a search for remains changed in an instant, and a multi-national effort exploded into action. Supplies were sent down. NASA consulted on how to extract the miners safely, Chile’s Navy shipyard built custom hardware, and 15 years ago today, all 33 rode a coffin-sized micro lift into the fresh air.

The problem with our gadgets is they tend to do what we ask them to, and sometimes… sometimes we mean to ask them for a 5:50 alarm, but that isn’t what we actually say.
